The highly anticipated White Pelican Club is officially back on track for its grand debut on the Vero Beach barrier island. Following a prolonged delay stemming from local regulatory hurdles, the private dining and drinking establishment has resumed renovations at Pelican Plaza, promising a refined social and culinary experience for the Indian River County community.
In the late summer of last year, renovation work at the club’s future home was abruptly paused. Neighboring retail tenants, concerned by the construction activity, prompted site visits from both City of Vero Beach and Indian River County inspectors. The municipal inspections revealed that the ambitious project lacked the necessary city business permits and county construction permits, resulting in official “Stop Work” notices posted on the property in September.
Today, the ownership group has successfully navigated the bureaucratic landscape, resolving all outstanding permitting issues with local government officials. Throughout the costly delay, investors demonstrated a long-term commitment to the barrier island venture by maintaining lease payments and keeping key culinary and management staff on the payroll.
Located in the former space of the Vinz wine bar, the project expands into a neighboring storefront to include a dedicated cigar bar. The combined 1,500-square-foot indoor facility will seamlessly flow into an outdoor covered patio, creating an inviting, upscale atmosphere. Spokesman Rick Engel, a hospitality industry veteran who relocated to Vero Beach from Austin, Texas, emphasized that the establishment is steering away from the massive scale of traditional private clubs. Instead, the focus remains strictly on curation, sourcing natural ingredients, and maintaining an intimate atmosphere dedicated to social grace.
To build momentum ahead of the opening, the management team is currently hosting a series of exclusive, invitation-only “pop-up” parties across the island. These catered events serve a dual purpose: treating current members to the culinary creations of the club’s chefs and attracting prospective members in an intimate setting. Local residents and founding members Bill and Julia Olson recently opened their Indian River Shores home for one of these gatherings. The strategy underscores a community-driven approach, highlighting the value of strong local connections and shared social experiences.
Founding Membership Details:
- Couples: Requires a $2,000 initiation fee accompanied by $3,500 in annual dues.
- Individuals: Requires a $1,000 initiation fee alongside $2,500 in annual dues.
- Capacity: The club is strictly capping this initial founding tier at 100 memberships.
The White Pelican Club has officially resolved its municipal permitting delays with the City of Vero Beach and Indian River County, allowing construction to resume on its 1,500-square-foot Pelican Plaza facility as it actively recruits its first 100 founding members through local pop-up events.
While the exact opening date remains fluid due to final design enhancements and aesthetic improvements, the window to join as a founding member is rapidly closing. The initial membership drive is slated to conclude at the end of April, after which initiation fees and annual dues for standard social memberships will see an increase. Once operational later this year, the White Pelican Club plans to continually evolve its offerings, introducing curated wine storage, collaborative guest chef dinners, live musical entertainment, and community-focused philanthropic events.
